New Application Guide to Deploy Structured Cabling for Fiber Optic Infrastructure

October 02, 2023

A 23-page new application guide published by Cisco and Corning Cable Systems covers best practices for deploying fiber optic infrastructure to Cisco's Nexus 6000 series data center switches.

"As the speed of data centers now increases from 10 Gbps to 40 Gbps, and gradually increases to 100 Gbps, different optical technologies and cabling infrastructure are required." The guide noted in the introduction. "When designing a network system, it is important to plan the wiring system in advance. The purpose is to meet the current network requirements and adapt to future growth."

The application guide covers the wiring requirements for 0 gbps infrastructure and the basic wiring principles supporting Cisco Nexus 6000 series switches. Although alternative wiring options (such as shielded two-conductor feeders and active optical components) are mentioned, the guidelines focus on the wiring of pluggable optically enhanced 4-core wire small pluggable (QSFP +) modules.

"As the network develops, structured cabling systems provide a flexible cabling plan to meet the tasks that are commonly implemented to move, add, and change (MAC) infrastructure." The guide also said in the introduction. "A good analogy for supporting structured wiring systems is the power outlet in your home. However, if there is no power outlet, all equipment must be directly connected to the switch or panel, and at least 200 feet of cable is required."

"As you add multiple devices or appliances to your home, this method will be inadequate and will become difficult to manage." The guide continued. "The same concept applies to data centers. As infrastructure increases, and as the need for reliable networks that continue to move and change and are also easy to troubleshoot, the structured cabling in the data center becomes essential."
